McGRATH FAMILY YMCA – SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA
A two story 45,500 sf fitness center constructed utilizing tilt-up concrete walls and architectural features that creatively connected the project to an active retail center adjoining the property. Constraints presented by the adjoining uses, Caltrans restrictions due to the adjacency of Hwy. 94, bisecting water easements and known archeological resources abutting the property, all presented unique development challenges in building the project. Constructed in 2009 the facility continues to be one of the more active properties owned and operated by the YMCA. Included in the facility are 3,500 sf of shower and locker rooms, multiple exercise rooms, a child care facility, offices for administrative support, a 2,000 sf multi-purpose room, a 7,400 sf gymnasium with hardwood floors and a second floor weight/fitness area. Only 11,000 sf was initially build-out of a 15,500 sf second floor space as funds were not initially available to finish. Rapid membership increases allowed the owner’s to contract with Hamann to finish after only 1-year of operation. Two large pools, one glass enclosed, with spas and children’s splash pad are a major draw to the facility. All were added after the initial opening challenging the Hamman team to complete construction with minimum disruption to the members use of the new facility.
